How to choose the right MBA institute?

In the last and the concluding article of MBA Basics, we will discuss the types of MBA institutes and how to choose the right one for you.

There are many MBA institutes in India. Recent estimates put the number at over 1,800. That is why it is all the more important to make the right choice. MBA institutes can be classified into two broad categories: Government-aided and Private.
Government Aided
The seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) along with the newly found IIM Ranchi, management departments of various IITs and NITIE, Mumbai University System, and various other government universities offer an MBA degree. Some of the better ones are FMS Delhi, Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) New Delhi and Kolkata, JBIMS (Mumbai University), Banaras Hindu University and University Business School, Chandigarh.
Private
Majority of MBA institutes fall under this category. Some of the leading private MBA institutes are MDI Gurgaon, XLRI Jamshedpur and IMT Ghaziabad. Some MBA institutes are also promoted by corporate houses like BIMTECH and NIRMA Institute of Management.
Criteria to choose the right MBA institute
According to Dr. Rajeev Kumra, faculty of IIM Lucknow, certain parameters should be analyzed before joining an MBA institute. “The parameters should be unique pedagogy, code of conduct, updated curriculum, faculty, infrastructure, alumni and placements. These are the parameters you should judge before you choose an MBA institute,” Dr. Kumra emphasized.
Dr. Kumra said that visiting a campus before taking the admissions is a good idea. It gives you the idea whether the institute fulfills all the parameters or not. “A good MBA institute teaches you how to think, cross functional competence, functional domain knowledge and team work,” Dr. Kumra added.
Will the right MBA institute choose you?
The admission to an MBA institute is a two way process. Along with you choosing the MBA institute, the B School should also choose you. All of you would like to join the top MBA institute like the IIMs, XLRI, etc. but what if you don’t get selected by these institutes?
According to MBA experts, in that case you should join a B School which matches all your criteria and is AICTE approved. A B School which is ranked within top 20 is a good option.
